25th September 2017 marks 10 years since the passing of Miko Rwayitare. To commemorate this anniversary, Family and Friends will celebrate his life in March 2018 at his home country, Rwanda.
Miko Rwayitare is remembered for being the first person to bring cellphone in Africa. He started Telecel in 1986 after convincing the regime of Mobutu Sese Seko to allow him to build a trial cellular network in Zaire. Telecel, which connected Africa’s first-ever cellphone call, became a leading player in mobile telephony in Sub-Saharan Africa. He sold 80% of the company to Egypt’s Orascom Telecom for US$413 Million in March 2000
